Strengthening Engineering Ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa
CALL FOR INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
Internship and apprenticeship opportunities for Engineers in the Water Sector in East Africa
Global Water Partnership Tanzania (GWPTZ in collaboration with Department of Water Resources Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania; Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering, Design, Art & Technology, Makerere University in Uganda; and Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, Moi University in Kenya are jointly implementing an IDRC funded project titled Building Capacity In Water Engineering for Addressing Sustainable Development Goals in East Africa (CAWESDEA). This is part of a larger programme on strengthening engineering ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa.
The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of fresh graduate engineers aligned to the water sector in East Africa by enhancing their competency and employability to effectively meet the societal and developmental needs while focusing on gender parity in the profession. In this project, efforts are focused on infusing innovative capacity building initiatives to address engineering skill inadequacies in the water sector. The project, will among other things, enhance innovative skills delivery approaches while supporting sustainable participatory mechanisms for aligning engineering training curricula within the existing engineering ecosystem frameworks. The project will also promote on-going initiatives targeting to increase the number, skills and experience of female engineers engaged in the water sector in East Africa.
An initial activity in this project endeavoured to establish the status of the three EA countries as regards to the capacity of fresh engineers in the water sector. The findings pointed out gaps in job market skills requirements in relation to skill delivery.
In order to address inadequacies in market skill requirement for fresh engineers, the CAWESDEA project is piloting an internship programme in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The interns will be hosted in reputable firms or institutions in their home countries for a maximum period of 6 months under the supervision of both academics and practicing engineers where they will be expected to develop innovative solutions to a water challenge through Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach. The thematic areas that the project is focusing on are (i) Water supply and sanitation (ii) Water Quality (iii) Water Resources Engineering. The programme is expected to start in October 2019 and is envisaged that through this practical engagement, the skills, competencies and experiences of the successful interns will be enhanced to make them more competitive for modern market demands.
In this regard, the CAWESDEA project is looking for fresh engineering graduates, from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, who are interested to pursue a 6 month an internship programme in the water sector (within the aforementioned thematic areas). The fresh engineering graduates could be from any engineering discipline e.g Mechanical, Civil, Agricultural, Electrical, Chemical etc. The interns will be supported to develop prototype projects that have the potential of being scaled out.
